Sibiu is the oldest medieval town from Romania, dating since 12th century, it became a very important trade center in the Middle Ages and the largest fortified town, having the same size as Vienna, back in 16th century. Day tour to Corvin's castle and Sibiu, starting from Brasov
At 8.00 AM, our specialist guide will pick-up you in the morning from your location in Brasov and you’ll start our day tour to Corvin’s castle and Sibiu. We’ll drive towards Hunedoara (driving time aprox 3hr30 min). On the way the citadel of Fagaras which can be admired from the road. The Southern Carpathians mountains will offer us great sceneries on our left side. Arriving in Hunedoara we will visit the Corvin’s castle, also known as Hunyad castle. It is the biggest medieval castle from Transylvania and a former residence for Transylvanian Governors. Was built starting in early 15th century by the famous Transylvanian Governor – Iancu de Hunedoara (John Hunyad) and by his son Matei Corvin (Mathias Corvinus) who became the king of Hungary. The castle impresses with its massive gothic architecture and the strong fortifications.
In the afternoon we will visit Sibiu's old town. The major sights are Brukenthal Palace, Big Square, Little Square, Liars Bridge, Evangelical Cathedral, Council Tower, Orthodox Cathedral, Catholic cathedral, Old City Wall and towers.
The first documents regarding Sibiu appeared at the end of 12th century when Sibiu was called `Cibinum` after the river Cibin which crosses the city. In the 12th-13th centuries when the Transylvanian Saxons began to settle in this area, Sibiu was called `Hermannstadt`. The Romanians called the place `Sibiu`, which is reminiscent of the ancient name of `Cibinium`. Sibiu was one of the most important cities from Transylvania and for a while it was the capital. The Medieval Fortress of Sibiu was as large as the Fortress in Vienna in 16th century, is the greatest medieval monument in Transylvania, consisting of walls, fortifications and towers which surrounded it from all sides. Some of these were so well preserved that one can easily imagine what the Fortress looked like 600 years ago. Along our walking tour of Sibiu we will pass by the main landmarks and your tour guide will reveal to you the very interesting history of this town and its evolution along the centuries.
In the evening we will be back to Brasov. Drop-off at your hotel.
